Gleeson Homes is a UK housebuilder operating predominantly in the north of England, building affordable, quality homes. Despite the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic, Gleeson Homes completed the sale of over 1,000 homes in 2020 with 71 active build sites and over 13,000 plots in the development pipeline.

To support their drive to become a more data-driven organisation, Gleeson Homes engaged with specialist data and analytics consultancy Decision Inc. UK — seeking a comprehensive solution that would unify their data estate and reduce reliance on manual processes.

The engagement comprised multiple objectives, all centred on eliminating manual overhead and giving Gleeson Homes a single, trusted view of its business — across finance, sales, construction, and customer operations.

Power BI as the Single Source of Truth

Drawing on a wealth of experience in data and analytics, Decision Inc. UK presented Power BI as the platform best suited to the needs of Gleeson Homes. Using Power BI, an organisation can ingest data from many disparate systems and files into a single, robust data model. The vast array of visuals available within Power BI makes it the ideal tool for impactful dashboards to support any type of analysis.

Using Power BI's native data preparation functionality, the solution draws in data from three distinct source types — all refreshed multiple times a day within the cost-effective Power BI Pro licensing framework:

Databases

Covers the ERP system and many other business applications — the primary source for transactional and operational data across the organisation.

SharePoint Files

Provides additional data such as mappings or data not captured within an application — enabling manual inputs and reference tables to be blended seamlessly.

SFTP Servers

Provides access to data in third-party applications which can then be integrated with existing organisational data sources — eliminating manual exports from external systems.

Once the data was collated and transformed, the team developed a comprehensive set of dashboards drawing on a rich suite of Power BI visualisations. All dashboards are presented to end users in a single web-based portal, with configurable email subscriptions to precise data slices and intuitive collaboration via the comments pane.

Provides real-time visibility of build progress across all 71 active sites, enabling early identification of bottlenecks in the process and opportunities for operational optimisation.

Defect Resolution

Enables workload prioritisation based on defect ageing, monitors compliance with SLAs, and supports analysis of trends and recurring defect themes to drive quality improvements.

The Power BI suite is currently used by over 200 users across the organisation, providing a single platform to analyse data from multiple different business functions — reducing reliance on Excel spreadsheets and eliminating the requirement to extract data from source systems directly.
