The Client
The Client is multinational energy and petrochemical company. It is engaged in worldwide upstream and downstream oil, gas,
and renewable activities, employing 24,000 people worldwide.
Their operations include exploration, production, refining, and distribution and marketing of petroleum-based products.

The Requirement
Like many organisations, the client holds vast quantities of valuable data in its SAP ERP solution.
Effective access, presentation and distribution of this information is a challenge faced across many industries. With users often left with the
task of manually extracting SAP reports, often into Excel, then proceeding to manually process the data for their reporting needs.
This process is arduous and time consuming and bears the risk of mistakes during the data preparation process. To counteract these risks The client engaged Decision Inc UK. to provide recommendations on the selection of an analytics tool and the development of the necessary system components.
Key project objectives:
Host requirements gathering workshops to understand the calculation methodology for the KPIs.
Determine the optimal analytics tool to be implemented, based on a wide variety of factors, including licencing, current systems landscape, tool functionality and complexity of deployment.
Design and build
o SAC data model structure, transformation, and load sequences.
o Interactive dashboards to expose these KPIs to the end users.
Publish the dashboards, distribute, and train the user base.

The Solution
For this project both Power BI and SAP Analytics Cloud were considered as solutions that would meet the needs of the client. Tool selection is a complex decision based on a variety of factors. Some of the deciding factors for this project were:
The existing systems landscape
The source data structures and source systems
Data integration capabilities with SAP
The solution utilised custom CDS views built inside the S/4 Public Cloud system to collect the data required to feed the SAC data models. These could then be ingested into a suite of 11 bespoke SAC models to provide an in-depth suite of information across the supply chain spectrum: Purchase requisitions, purchase orders, contracts, invoicing, workflow, goods and service receipting and inventory.
Storyboards in SAC were used to deliver the users complete flexibility to slice and dice the KPIs using multiple filters, provide insightful visuals and the option to export the raw data from the models out into Excel for further analysis if required.
The Outcome
The result delivered a comprehensive set of 18 SAC dashboards covering all aspects of supply chain.
This reduced the effort spent, manually extracting data, collating multiple data sets, and creating reports, equivalent to about 2 full time resources. This equated to reports being available ore than a week earlier per report cycle and with the effort saved, gave and ROI period of 13 months.
