The Client
A leading Australian gold and copper miner operates six mines that are globally distributed from Mugari in Western Australia to Red Lake in Ontario. The focus of the company is on operating its projects safely and efficiently, whilst developing their resources to the fullest potential.
After completing a data modernisation project via a third party consultancy, issues began to emerge with the stability of the data platform. This eroded trust within the business and negatively impacted their ability to make both strategy and operational data driven decisions. The company needed a trusted and experienced partner to help them address the issues and ensure its data landscape was once again stable and a source of trusted insights.

The Requirement
The company had worked with a third-party consultancy previously to modernise its data platform and analytics environment; however, it became quickly apparent that the project had not gone as planned. On a daily basis, the business was experiencing persistent failures and data issues in their analytics environment.
The mining company was a long-term partner of Decision Inc. Australia which, while not involved in the modernisation project, was initially called in to provide emergency support to fix the priority issues impacting the data platform.

But these were only band aid solutions, with many operational issues continuing to plague the business as a result of the failed modernisation project. It was clear that, if the business was to rely on its data, it needed less reactive responses to issues, and instead a more proactive approach to reduce and eliminate stability and data quality concerns.
Tony Butler, Managing Director, Decision Inc. Australia

Decision Inc. proposed an operational support engagement, integrating Decision Inc.’s team into the client’s technology function to manage the production data platforms. This meant embedding Decision Inc. consultants into the client’s team so they could proactively work to mitigate operational issues and provide permanent solutions to create more stability for the company’s analytics landscape.
The Solution
Decision Inc. began operating the environment and, over 12 months, applied an approach of continual service improvement to design and deploy long-term solutions to the many foundational issues. The consultancy was soon able to identify the root causes of the issues and was able to eliminate all systemic failures in the environment.
“We identified each issue and addressed it at the source, which meant we were able to reintroduce stability back into the platform across the breadth of the data environment,” said Butler.
One example of this is when Decision Inc. delivered a project to rationalise the number of PowerBI gateways within the data landscape, thus simplifying unnecessary complexity and making the environment more manageable. The result of this was a 60 per cent reduction in gateway failures, while enabling and simplifying future scalability.
The Outcome
“Our environment is now more stable and efficient to operate. While achieving this stability, Decision Inc. was also able to increase our level of governance and quality of reporting as a result,” said a spokesperson at the mining company. “It’s helped our team streamline our data landscape and our company to realise the promise that a modernisation program should ultimately deliver.”
Decision Inc. eliminated the daily failures being raised within the environment, rebuilding trust with the mining business. The simple addition of automated notifications when adhoc failures occurred enabled proactive and timely responses to new data pipeline issues.
“Decision Inc. worked tirelessly to deliver critical and important projects, including the integration of a new mine site, enhancements of existing reports, and automation of new HR reporting requirements. Throughout the engagement, the Decision Inc team collaborated effectively with our internal teams to ensure smooth operational handover of the new environment,” said the company spokesperson. “It has established business confidence in our data platform and enabled true data-driven decisions for both day-to-day operations, and in support of critical strategic initiatives.”
